Your child has almost certainly used an AI chatbot already. Surveys keep finding the same thing: kids adopt these tools long before their parents have decided how they feel about them. That gap is normal. What makes it hard is that most of the advice you will read assumes you already know what the tool is.
So start there. When your child types a question into ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, the system does not go and look up an answer. It predicts, one word at a time, what a good answer to that question would look like: based on patterns it learned from an enormous amount of text.
That single fact explains nearly everything else in this course: why it is brilliant at explaining a concept five different ways, why it invents a book that does not exist, why it will confidently tell your ten-year-old something wrong, and why 'just ask it if it is sure' does not work.
The accurate picture is duller and more useful: it is a very fluent pattern machine. Fluency is the product. Correctness is a frequent side effect, not a guarantee.
A fluent explaining machine is an unusually good fit for the thing schools cannot give every child: infinite patience. A tired teacher with thirty pupils cannot explain long division a sixth time, in terms of Minecraft, at 9pm. This can, and it will not sigh.
The risk and the opportunity come from the same property. It will explain anything, endlessly, in any style: including explaining something wrong, and including doing the work instead of teaching it. Which one you get depends almost entirely on how the request is phrased, which is what the rest of this course is about.
The same topic, two ways to ask
"Solve these five fraction problems." → your child has five answers and has learned nothing. "I am 11. Explain how to add fractions with different denominators using a pizza. Then give me one problem to try. Do not tell me the answer until I have guessed." → your child has a method and did the work.
Notice that the second prompt is not more technical. It is just more specific about who is learning and what the tool is allowed to do. That is the whole skill, and you can teach it in an afternoon.

Open any AI chatbot and ask it a question you already know the answer to, from your own work or hobby: something specific, not general. Read the answer as an expert. Note the one detail it got subtly wrong or fudged. That is the mistake it makes with your child's homework too, except neither of you can see it.
