The TOEFL iBT changed on 21 January 2026. Reading and Listening became adaptive, Speaking was redesigned, and Writing gained new tasks. Write for an Academic Discussion remains from the previous format. Check the task list in any preparation book: older material can still build language skills, but may not match the test you will take.
Integrated Writing, which combined reading a passage, listening to a lecture and writing a response, was removed. Practise the current writing tasks for exam familiarity; reading, listening and summarising remain useful language skills.
Twelve task types in total: three Reading, four Listening, three Writing and two Speaking. The approximately eight-minute Speaking section uses Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview.
The 0 to 120 total was replaced by a band scale from 1.0 to 6.0 in half-band steps, aligned to the CEFR. Each section receives a band, and the overall score is the average of the four rounded to the nearest half band. For two years after January 2026, score reports also include a comparable overall score on the 0–120 scale; this is not four new section scores out of 30.
The requirement problem
A university website may still say "TOEFL iBT 80". That requirement uses the older scale, which still appears as a comparable overall score during the two-year transition. Before you book, write to the admissions office and ask which scale they now accept and what band satisfies their requirement. Doing this early costs one email; doing it after results arrive can cost an application cycle.
Reading and Listening use two-stage adaptivity: an initial module informs the difficulty of a later module. This is not an item-by-item adjustment after every answer. ETS publishes this structure, while exact routing and score calculations should not be guessed. Pace yourself across the timed module rather than sacrificing later questions to the first few.
