How to use AI as a parent, without it doing the homework for your child

A ten-year-old opens a chatbot to finish a maths worksheet. Within ninety seconds, the worksheet is complete, and the child has learned nothing about fractions. A parent watching this happen for the first time faces a genuine dilemma. The tool is not doing anything wrong, exactly. It is answering the question it was asked. The problem is the question. Most disagreements between parents and children about AI trace back to this single confusion: a tool built to produce an answer is being used in place of the practice that produces understanding.

Where the line actually sits

The distinction is not "AI use" versus "no AI use." It is closer to this: did the child do the thinking, or did the tool do it for them, with the child copying out the result. Asking a chatbot to explain long division a second time, in simpler terms, is help. Asking it to solve the specific problems on tonight's worksheet is not. The same tool, the same conversation window, produces two entirely different outcomes depending on what is typed into it.

  • Explaining a concept the child already partly understands: help.
  • Generating the specific answers to an assigned task: substitution.
  • Checking a child's own draft for errors, then having the child fix them: help.
  • Rewriting a child's draft into a better one they submit as their own: substitution.
  • Practising a skill through invented examples, such as ten new fraction problems: help.
  • Producing the exact ten problems the teacher assigned: substitution.

A useful test for a parent unsure which side of the line an activity falls on: could the child explain, out loud, five minutes later, how they got the answer. If not, the tool did the work.

A house rule that survives contact with a real evening

Rules that require constant supervision fail within a week, because no parent has the time to review every conversation. A rule that survives is one the child can apply without you standing over them. State it once, clearly, and let it do the work in your absence: AI may explain something you do not understand, and AI may check something you have already written. AI may not produce your answer before you have tried. Write it down somewhere visible. A rule a child has to remember from a single conversation three weeks ago will not hold; a rule taped to the noticeboard will.

Confident mistakes are the real risk, not laziness

The more subtle danger is not a child skipping the work outright. It is a child trusting an answer that sounds authoritative and is wrong. A chatbot states an incorrect historical date, a fabricated book title, or a wrong chemical formula with exactly the same confident tone it uses for a correct one. Nothing in how it sounds signals the difference. A child who has not been taught to expect this will absorb the error along with everything true in the same response.

The check is simple and worth teaching directly: pick one specific, checkable detail from the answer — a date, a name, a title — and look it up somewhere else. If that one detail does not hold up, treat the entire answer as unreliable, not merely the detail. Doing this exercise once with a child, together, watching a fabricated book title collapse under a two-second search, teaches the habit far more effectively than any warning about accuracy in the abstract.

A confident wrong answer and a confident right answer sound identical. The only fix is checking, not listening harder.

What actually deserves a strict rule

Homework substitution is the visible problem. The one that carries lasting consequences is what a child types into these tools in the first place. A named school essay, a photograph of a face, a home address, or a full name paired with a birthdate should never go into a consumer AI tool, because that data does not stay contained to the conversation window it was typed into. This rule is easier to teach than the homework line, because it needs no judgement call: it is simply "no personal details," stated plainly and enforced the same way every time.

Where to build the habit, not just state the rule

Reading a rule and living by it are different skills, and the second one needs practice. A short, low-stakes project, built together, does more than another conversation about screen time. Asking a chatbot to draft three questions for a school project, then having your child check each answer before it goes into the project, rehearses the exact judgement this article describes, in miniature, with nothing at stake if it goes wrong.
